about elaine hayes designs

elaine hayes designs image of relaxed roman shadeI’ve been sewing and designing curtains for over 20 years. Years ago I started making window treatments and other soft decorating items for myself and for friends. Guests often raved about how professional they looked. Then friends and family started asking me to make treatments for them; more and more jobs came through word of mouth and quickly my passion became an official business! I typically take on new clients in the Metro West area but will consider clients from other areas on occasion.

elaine hayes - how i work

elaine hayes designs image of table clothWindow treatments are such a personal decision, so often tied to home décor, desires and taste. I usually find it best to come to your home to get a sense of your window treatment needs: privacy, light blocking, sound absorption, unique décor, color and style of room. After doing preliminary measurements we can talk about style and design. I always bring along books to use as guides and to illustrate ideas. There is a $40 consultation fee which will be deducted from the total cost when a curtain order is placed.

Typically, with measurements and a sense of treatment I can begin to formulate a price estimate for labor. For choosing fabric, we can plan a trip to a fabric store or to the Boston Design Center, or I can bring samples to your home. When you have settled on your fabric and trim, I firm up the quote. Then it’s time to order or purchase materials and I get started- some times with a final measurement, then cutting, sewing and finishing.

elaine hayes designs - details

elaine hayes designs image of bed skirtI always use the highest quality linings and interlinings for your window treatment. I use a high quality machine or I hand stitch whenever necessary. Many of the treatments incorporate unique border trims, tassels, welting, all covering a range of styles and accents. I can help you choose quality hardware components. While I do my own installations for simple Roman Shades and Valences, I also have a professional carpenter who I sub-contract to for more complex installations. Regardless, I guarantee the quality of my workmanship and installation. Timing of initial consultation to finished installation can be as short as one week for simple designs and treatments and up to three weeks for more complex treatments. Pillows, shower curtains and other jobs usually fall inside these time frames. Of course, it is also dependant on whether the fabric and hardware you select are in stock or have to be ordered.
